Three and a half video-game filled years later, we got engaged. Here’s how that happened:
Friday Night
10:00 pm : Kellee tells Mike “If we don’t engaged soon, I’m going to be upset”. Mike is okay with this.
Saturday
6:30 AM : Mike’s alarm goes off. He sneaks of the bedroom, tripping over a cat on the way. Kellee is not disturbed by the yelping, human or feline.
6:45 AM : Mike puts on clothes he’s hidden in the 2nd bedroom. He plants notes all over the apartment. He turns on his alarm again. He leaves the apartment.
7:00 AM : Shiggy is our cat. This is important to know, soon. It’s not tied to any particular time, but now seemed good to let you know.
9:00 AM : BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
9:05 AM : Kellee tries to kick Mike, to get him to turn of the alarm. That doesn’t work, so she rolls over to turn the alarm off herself. She finds a note “yes, you should be excited, check Shiggy” on top of the alarm. Suddenly, she doesn’t mind being woken up early.
9:06 AM : Kellee finds the note “Tim’s House / 11 AM / Be On Time” on Shiggy’s collar.
11:00 AM : Arrives at Tim’s place to find a pile of 50 wrapped presents. They are poorly wrapped, but Kelee is not dating Mike because of his wrapping prowess.
Tim gives Kellee a card with a phone number on it. She calls it, and one of the presents starts to ring. Inside the present, she finds a phone and a flashlight. The phone has one contact listed in it, Tracy Fullerton.
11:45 PM : Kellee finds our friends Richard and Tracy playing scrabble at Tracy’s house. The letters on the board spell “blacklight”. Kellee realizes the flashflight is actually a blacklight, shines it on the board, and gets the address to a nearby park.
12:00 PM : Mike heads to the final destination, a long jetty near the marina. He begins negotiating with two drunk fishermen, to get them to leave before Kellee shows up. This is a really entertaining conversation, and involves the phrase “You have no idea who we are, we could be two crazy drunk dudes”. Actually, Mike knows exactly who you are – two crazy drunk dudes.
12:20 PM : Kellee goes to a park at 7th and Wilshire. She finds our friend Alan waiting for her. Alan gives Kellee a package with a bunch of colored blocks in it. A note in the package tells her to call a professional organizer. Kellee calls her friend Annie in New York, who happens to be a professional organizer. This may or may not have been planned.
12:25 : Annie walks Kellee through assembling the colored blocks. They spell the letters “SMPL”, which leads Kellee to the nearby Santa Monica Public Library.
12:30 : Kellee finds Mike’s brother Jon at his laptop, in the library. Jon has been waiting here since 10:00 AM. That was really good of him.
Jon is video Skyping with Jake and Shawna in Toronto. Shawna really wants a piece of pizza from Abbot’s Pizza in Venice. What a co-incidence! Kellee leaves for the pizza place. Jon is stuck at the library. Shawna and Jake continue to be in Canada.
12:40 : Kellee finds her friend Steve hanging out beside Abbot’s pizza. He gives Kellee a key that belongs to her brother, and asks her to return it for him. Kellee doesn’t have a slice of pizza, which is a mistake because it is delicious.
12:50 : Kellee gets to her brother Sean’s place. The key opens up a locked picture frame. She finds a map inside the picture frame, that leads to the final location. She also finds quarters for parking.
1:00 : Kellee parks on the street beside the parking lot near the jetty. She doesn’t use the quarters.
1:15 : Kellee walks almost but not quite all the way down the jetty. The drunk fishermen (who agreed to move), encourage her to keep going.
Kellee finds Mike at the end of the Jetty. There is a proposal (his). There are tears (hers). There are shouts of “go big Mike” (the drunk guys).
1:16 : Realize “holy cow, we’re getting married”.
1:30 : Pick up Jon. Have lunch. Start planning wedding.
